Quality -> Chemical composition -> Micro components -> Boron

General characteristics

Boron belongs to IIIa group of Periodic table of the elements and in group of semi-metals. Boron is mostly using in industry of glass, soaps and detergents.

Origin in water

Basic source of boron in underground waters are minerals of boracites and borax. They occur in salts bearings together with gypsum and anhydrite. Beside these, boron sources can be igneous rocks, like tourmaline and datolite. Underground waters with recent volcanic activity and also water with marine origin have bigger quantities of this element. Migration form of boron depends from pH value of environment.

Medical aspect

It does not established as essential for people and its biochemical function is not settled yet. There are some evidences that boron loading through daily nutrition can have useful influence on bones calcification and their keeping.

Positive effect

Boron is necessary together with calcium for bone construction and generally in bone metabolism. Also is useful in prevention teeth disintegration and in dental enamel developing.

Negative effect

Long expose to boron, boron acid or boron salts, can bring to chronic poising which manifest through appetite loss, sickness, retch and rash. Borates absorb very fast from intestine and distribute through tissues and organs and they can penetrate in placenta.

Maximal allowable concentrations

According to recommendations of EU (Directive 98/83/EC) and according to our rules for drinking water (Sl. list SRJ 42/98), limitary value for boron is 300 ng/1.
