General characteristics 

Potassium belongs to Ia group of Periodic table of the elements and it is in group of alkali metals. It is seventh element in Earth crust with 2,4% of mass. It is similar as sodium from the air and it very fast oxidizes.  The most potassium minerals are indissoluble. They decay in water and they burn spontaneous. Many potassium salts are important like: hydroxides, nitrates, carbonates, chlorides, chlorates, bromides, iodides, sulphates and chromates. It is using in industry of sons, glass and in chemical industry.

Origin in water

Although this ion is very similar to sodium, potassium is very rare in underground waters, no matter on good solubility of potassium salts. Main source in underground waters are soluble salts of salt bearing and igneous rocks with potassium felsphates. In low-mineralized waters maximal concentration of this ion is 4-10% of sodium concentration. Potassium concentration is the biggest in these waters.

Medical aspect

Potassium is necessary for water regulation in cells. It keeps osmotic pressure. Potassium is responsible for transfer of nerve impulse and for muscle contraction. Potassium helps in preservation of fluid balance, and with that restrains dehydration and arrest of water odds in organism. There are also suspicions that potassium can help in battle against cancer.

Positive effect

Potassium assists in conservation of acidy-base balance and osmotic pressure. It plays important part in muscle contraction (especially cardiac muscle), transfer of nerve impulses, enzyme action and in function of cell membrane. Potassium is significant in process phosphorilisation and in production of idle glycogen in liver cells.

Lack of potassium during the mixed nutrition, practically is impossible, because all provisions content potassium in adequate quantities. To lack of potassium can come because of the potassium loss from cells and if exist propensity to acidosis, during amplified muscle work, hyperthyroidism, diabetes, high febrility, gastroenteritis and enter colitis.

Negative effect

The large loading of potassium is possible. Indications of this appearance are weariness, weakness, extinction of hearing and metal taste in mouth.

According to recommendations of EU, potassium has not direction as parameter for attention (Directive 98/83/EC). According to our rules for drinking water
(Sl. list SRJ 42/98) limitary value is 12 mg/1.
