General characteristics

Magnesium, as calcium, belongs to IIa group of Periodic table of the elements and it is in group of alkali-earth metals. It is eighth element in Earth crust. Magnesium never occurs in elementary shape and magnesium builds deposits of magnesite (MgCO3) and dolomite (CaMg(CO3)2). It is using for quick photography, alloys, pyrotechnics and inflammable bombs. Magnesium is nutritive element of plants and animals. The most of magnesium salts are very soluble in water. This element reputes as intoxicate in concentration, which expects in waters.

Origin in water

Magnesium origin in water is connecting with big spread of this element in nature. Because of that, magnesium is located in all natural waters. Magnesium usually occurs in low-mineralized natural waters as prevalent cation  Mg2+ and concentration is about 1 g/l. Magnesium origin is from sedimentary rocks, like magnesium-carbonate and many others. Origin of this ion can be from igneous rocks, during the silicate decay (pyroxenes, amphiboles, olivenes etc).

Medical aspect

Magnesium part in organism is multiple: it reacts directly on nerve-muscle plate, it is necessary for normal function of vitamin C and for operation of vitamin B1, assists in enzyme process which bring to energy produce, decreases level of coagulation, protects interior wall of capillaries from fibroses, catalysts operation of fat, proteins and carbon- hydrates.

Positive effect

Magnesium helps in fat combustion and in energy produce. It helps in repression of sloughs. Magnesium conduces in health of cardiovascular system and in prevention of heart attack. It also makes teeth healthy. Magnesium besets making calcium stores and in forming of kidney and gall calculus. It mollifies digestive problems. In combination with calcium it works like natural resource for appeasement. It mollifies PMS.

Negative effect

Expanded loading of magnesium salts has laxative and diuretic effect, especially for persons who do not assimilate on large doses. Large doses of magnesium at little children can bring to appearance of rachitis

Maximal allowable concentrations

According to recommendations of EU for fresh water, magnesium has not direction as parameter for attention (Directive 98/83/EC). According to our rules for drinking water
(Sl. list SRJ 42/98) limitary value for magnesium is 50 mg/1.

In direction of European Economic Community 80/777/EEC is prescription that in case if magnesium concentration in bottled natural mineral waters is bigger then 50 mg/l, that water must declare as magnesium water. These criteria accept in domestic rules (Sl list SCG 53/05). Extra limits for magnesium content in bottled waters do not special signify.
